Personality: Takuto is bright and cheerful, and almost always energetic and optimistic. This is not only her persona and how he wants others to view him, but the basis who he wants to be on the inside. In this sense, Takuto has mental/emotional layers, but as he tries to be as simple and transparent a person as possible… it really doesn’t seem like he has these layers at all. However, his outward cheerful self really does mirror his bright inner self, but he has a middle layer of severe self doubt which comes out in a few situations, such as when he worries that he is just a third wheel in his relationships with his best friends Sugata and Wako.

Although he aims to be simple and can be kind of an idiot (the show labels him “ignorant youth” at one point during the series), Takuto is very observant and in some ways smarter than he appears. He has a tendency to speak about the metaphorical in very literal terms, and vice versa, which makes him seem simultaneously incredibly mature and also a little dumb. Most of his metaphors revolve around stars or other celestial objects. He is still only 15/16 years old during the series, but he has an incredible amount of maturity when dealing with (or just the ability to never think about) heavy issues like abandonment by his parents and his father trying to kill his friends. However, he still struggles with teen problems—especially the sort that revolve around girls and romantic relationships. These sorts of struggles he seems to take an odd sort of pleasure in, because worrying about whether CPR counts as a kiss and getting in trouble for lighting your dorm room on fire are the mundane worries that belong to all teenage boys. (Right?) And thus when Takuto gets flustered or gets involved in teenage drama, he also gets reassurance that he’s a well-adjusted teen. However, when it counts, Takuto shows himself to be a reliant and very caring friend. For example, he vows to take down all of the enemy cybodies in order to defend Wako, and over the course of the series, this is exactly what he does despite rather stacked odds.

He does, however, have a few instances of maladjustment. Trauma in his past, namely abandonment by his parents and then the death of his best friend in middle school, have dramatically changed Takuto over the course of his life. Takuto admits to being very closed as a child, which probably stems from knowing his parents didn’t want him and left him to be raised by his grandfather (who was fortunately a totally awesome guy). It is his friendship with Natsuo, and Natsuo’s subsequent death that convinced Takuto to always try his hardest to be bright and really live life to his fullest. After all, in some ways Takuto feels he has to live twice as hard as other people in order to carry on Natsuo’s legacy. Survivor’s guilt is probably a contributing factor in of Takuto pushing himself so hard, for example when he swam to Southern Cross Island from the mainland, a feat which nearly killed him. The other factor for Takuto throwing himself needlessly into a life-or-death situation like that would be related to his sense of self-worth, which is secretly very low because of the parental abandonment. He understands that he doesn’t have any basis for feeling worthless (and he knows he’s a really talented and likable guy because he tries twice as hard as other people to prove to himself that he is), so it doesn’t crop up too often, but it’s deep down in there. In these seemingly pointless or altogether avoidable life-or-death situations, such as swimming to the island or choosing to fight against the Glittering Crux, Takuto seems to accept that fate will take responsibility for his actions and that “what will be will be.” This can be seen a bit as the show itself parodying various tropes for shounen hero types or just as a plot device, but it also indicates Takuto’s (probably unhealthy) acceptance of his own fate as the Galactic Pretty Boy. After all, if he didn’t have the luck to survive getting to the island from his own power, then his chances of succeeding in the coming fights might be not so good. Sugata once questions whether Takuto’s decision to risk his life by swimming to the island was some kind of test, and it seems Sugata’s hunch wasn’t too far off the mark. In short, it was likely a way for Takuto to test his fate and luck, and prove to himself whether he was worthy of both carrying on Natsuo’s legacy as well as completing his own destiny.

Finally, no personality section on Takuto Tsunashi would be complete without bringing up his sexuality. (He puts the “star” in Star Driver, after all. As well as the “Takuto” and the “Kagayaki”…) Although Takuto’s main romantic interest in the show is Wako (and he is very serious about his crush on her!), Takuto winds up in flirtations with several other female characters in the show, including a secluded date with a girl that is actually a teacher at his school and being kissed by a young, already-married classmate. He gets used as a prize for a volleyball contest, as well, and is part of the drama club’s fanservice group. But no where in this confusing drama is Takuto expected to stick to one woman—it is only in conversations with his best friend Sugata, who is engaged to Takuto’s crush, that the idea of Takuto marrying any one person comes up. (And even then it’s a bizarre “if you marry her can I still come over and play?” kind of conversation.) Additionally, Takuto admits his first crush was on his middle school companion who loved his friend Natsuo. And now his next main crush is engaged to his best friend Sugata. So although Takuto’s polyamory is not explicitly stated in the show, there is strong evidence that he enjoys flirting with really everyone all at the same time and also is strongly attracted to couples, as both of his accepted crushes were on girls who already had strong feelings for another boy. (Additionally, half of the girls in series seem to ship him with his best friend Sugata… including both girls that he used to have a crush on (which leads me to wonder: do they know something that the audience doesn’t???)) In short, my interpretation is a bisexual polyamorous Takuto who has no idea what “polyamorous” really means or that it is a possible lifestyle choice. But he knows what kind of people he likes to be around, and who he’ll fight for, and that’s all that really matters in the end.

Abilities: Takuto’s main ability is to transform into the Galactic Pretty Boy and pilot the cybody Tauburn, which he is connected to and can call using the Tau mark (an X on his chest, which glows underneath a scar). The exact extent and quality of Takuto’s connection to the cybody is never fully explained, though it would seem that Star Drivers are able to access their cybody’s “memories” when they first apprivoise. Takuto was given the Tau mark by his grandfather (who refused to give it to his son, Takuto’s father), and was given only vague instructions on how to apprivoise and very little—if any—advice on what would happen next. You would think he might have mentioned a giant robot coming to his aid, but apparently not. Perhaps accessing Tauburn’s memories proved to be a good enough instruction manual.

Tauburn is technically not the strongest cybody, although Takuto has never been defeated in a match. And for this reason, Takuto’s prowess as a fighter cannot be understated. He was trained from a young age to “defend the powerless”, and so has quite good basic martial arts skills as well as very good dual-wielding swordsmanship skills. His single-wielding skills are, strangely, only slightly better than average. His reflexes and learning are also incredible, causing his best friend/kendo sensei to remark that Takuto only needs to see an opponent’s attack once before developing and performing the appropriate counterattack. (Which, if you think hard enough about that, IS PRETTY FREAKING INCREDIBLE.) Takuto is ambidextrous, impeccably fit, very fast, and has incredible stamina. He also literally has the strongest libido out of any Star Driver, which is saying something as all of the Star Drivers must, by definition, have incredibly strong libido in order to drive or rehabilitate their cybodies.

Takuto’s other abilities revolve around his good looks and personality. He makes friends easily and has a knack for making others smile. He is also, very literally, a pretty boy. As in, right up in the top two at his school on his first day there. He once won a cybody match because his opponent was too busy staring at his abs. His honesty and kindness will often come across as bold flirting even if he is not actually trying to flirt.

Although everyone who has apprivoised a cybody is supposed to have a unique power called a First Phase, Takuto makes no direct reference to this power and appears to not have any clue what his power even is. In theory, any of his skills or abilities could be his First Phase (and as he is so talented already, it really doesn’t matter what it is).

In the Star Driver movie, Takuto is shown to have the power to fly in a streak of light when he is in his Galactic Pretty Boy form. He is also shown to fly faster than fighter jets. He doesn’t use this power during the series, but apparently gains this skill after destroying the cage of Zero Time that keeps the cybodies from accessing the real world.

Why?: Takuto is the kind of person to take control and do what needs to be done, no matter the odds. In short, he’s main character material. He is good in situations where he learns from other people and is comfortable around authority, but when it counts he’s never in a position where he takes directions from others.
Top 3 Choices: 1) Dionysos, the Greek god of fertility, wine, freedom, and madness. So basically set up to promote crazy drunk orgies having a good time. WHAT IS NOT TO LOVE ABOUT THIS?
2) Fascinus, the Roman god of the divine phallus (male fertility/virility). This is the one that is literally a penis. Just a penis. Sometimes winged.
3) Min, the Egyptian god of fertility, as well as a species of lettuce that apparently has physical qualities similar to a penis. People played naked games and climbed a huge wooden pole at festivals in his honor.
God Type: Takuto is a real go-getter. Helping people who need help is his thing, and although he’ll be embarrassed at first about being a fertility god, I’m sure he’ll become quite proud of it soon enough. He will aspire to live up to his previous incarnation as best he can, because he really does like people being happy, though he will definitely have to wrap his head around the literal fertility aspect, specifically as Takuto’s parents were teenagers when he was conceived. And the following abandonment was pretty obvious proof that neither of his parents were praying for fertility of any kind. (As Dionysos, he’d have an easier time because there’s more than just fertility/penises/penis lettuce to stand for, and he does like to encourage others to have a good time.) Although Takuto always has the best of intentions, his prayer-answering may very easily go awry because the route to happiness is not always as easy as he wants it to be.

It should be noted that this power makes him hands-down the best person to be intimate with ever (which is fair as a literal sex god?). ;)
